Using waste yarn, CO 32 sts. Change to main yarn. Work in garter st with knitted cord edges as follows:
Every row: Sl 4 sts Pwise with yarn in front, K to end of row.
Continue until piece measures 20" (22") from beg.
Remove waste yarn. As you pick out the waste yarn stitch by stitch, you will free the bottom loops of your first row of knitting. Place these new sts on one of your double pointed needles. Graft the ends of your strip together using the kitchener st.
Using 16" circular needle, with WS facing, pick up and K 140 (160) sts evenly along edge of strip (about 1 st for every ridge) just below cord edge. Break yarn and reattach on same side of piece as needle.
Round 1: * K14 (16), PM, rep from * to end of round. 10 markers placed.
Round 2 and all even numbered rounds: * K to 2 sts before marker, K2tog, rep from * to end of round.
Round 3 and all odd numbered rounds: K
Rep rounds 2 and 3 until 10 sts rem, changing to double pointed needles when necessary.
Break yarn, draw through rem 10 sts, pull tight and fasten off.
Place markers along remaining edge of hat body as follows: First marker at graft, second marker 3" away, third marker 9" (10") farther, and fourth marker 3" farther.
With WS facing, using double-pointed needles, pick up and K 24 sts between first and second markers. Break yarn and reattach on same side of piece as needle.
Every row: Sl 2 sts Pwise with yarn in front, K to end of row. Rep this row until piece measures 1½" from pick up.
Taper flap as follows: Every row: Sl 2 sts Pwise with yarn in front, K2tog, K to end of row. Rep this row until 4 sts rem. Work 4 st knitted cord for 6". Break yarn, draw through rem 4 sts, and fasten off.
Pick up 24 sts for second earflap between third and fourth markers, and complete to match first flap.
Make 2 pom poms and sew to ends of cords.
Weave in ends. Steam lightly to smooth out crown.

NOTE
4 st knitted cord: * K4, do not turn, slide work to other end of needle, draw yarn across back and repeat from * until desired length.

Loosely CO 64 (72) sts. Divide sts on three needles and join into a circle, being careful not to twist. Work in garter st for 8 rounds.
Change to st st and K 1 round, placing a marker at beg of round and after 32 (36) sts. Work 5 rounds without shaping.
Dec round: Sl marker, K2tog, K to marker, sl marker, K2tog, K to end of round.
Continue in st st, working dec round every 6th round 7 times more — 48 (56) sts.
Work 5 rounds without shaping.
Inc for hand: * K6 (7), m1, rep from * to end of round, removing markers as you come to them. 56 (64) sts rem.
Work 1 round without shaping.
Next round: Mark thumb gusset: K28 (32), PM, m1, PM, K28 (32).
Inc round: K to marker, sl marker, m1, K to marker, m1, sl marker, K to end of round.
Continue in st st, working inc round every third round until there are 19 (21) sts in thumb gusset.
Next round: K to marker, remove marker, place gusset sts on waste yarn for holding, CO 1 st to bridge the gap, remove marker, K to end of round. 57 (65) sts on needles.
Continue without shaping for ½".
Work in garter st for 8 rounds. BO loosely.
Place held gusset sts on needles. Join yarn and pick up 1 st at palm — 20 (22) sts. Arrange sts on 3 needles and work in garter st for 6 rounds. BO loosely.
Weave in ends and block to finished measurements. |
